Laser Hair Removal

What is Laser Hair Removal and How Does It Differ from Electrolysis?
Laser hair removal is the removal of unwanted hair through the means of applying a laser-based light source directly to the skin targeting the hair within each follicle.  The same heat principle applies as in thermolysis electrolysis, but no probe insertion occurs.  Instead, the laser light is absorbed by the melanin in the hair, vaporizing the pigment and restricting the hair follicle’s ability to regenerate the hair.   Several follicles are targeted with each laser pulse, enabling results to be obtained more quickly than with any other method.

Is It Safe?
All laser treatments are performed under the direction of a physician, the medical director of our clinic.  A complete medical history is taken and a spot test is performed on the skin before any treatments are commenced.  Protective eyewear is worn by both the client and the laser technician at the time of the treatment.   The LightSheer™ diode laser has a patented contact-cooling handpiece that protects the skin at all times.  Client safety and comfort is always our first priority.

Can Everyone Benefit from Laser Hair Removal?
The perfect candidate is someone with dark hair color.  Unlike electrolysis, for the laser to effectively disable a follicle the hair must be dark in color and thick enough to absorb sufficient laser light.  While skin color is a factor in setting the laser parameters, darker skin type may now safely be treated with certain laser lights.  The LightSheer™ diode laser used in our clinic is safe for use on all skin types.

What Areas May be Treated with Laser?
Women most frequently have their face, underarms, bikini line and legs treated.  Men are now experiencing the freedom of having their back, chest, face, neck and/or arms treated.  Laser has been found to be particularly useful in clearing up ingrown hair problems.  All areas of the face and body may be treated quickly and safely with the exception of the eye and eyebrow area.  They still must be treated only with electrolysis.

Does It Hurt?
Most of our clients find the laser treatments to be a comfortable procedure.  There is some sensation of heat and a snap much like a rubber band.  For larger areas such as a man’s back or lady’s legs, a topical anesthetic may be applied to lessen these sensations.

Electrolysis

What is Electrolysis and How is it Performed?
Use of electrolysis ensures unwanted hair will be removed safely and permanently.

Electrolysis has been effectively used for permanent removal of unwanted hair for over 100 years.  It is accomplished by the insertion of a fine sterile wire into the follicle next to the hair.  No puncturing of the skin is involved.  A small amount of electrical current is applied to the wire to destroy the germinative material in the follicle thereby prohibiting further hair growth.  The hair will then easily slide out of the follicle.  The skin is not harmed in any way.

What Areas May be Treated with Electrolysis?
Any external area of the body may be treated, regardless of hair color or thickness.  Any hair that is not eligible for laser, may be treated with electrolysis.

 Does it Hurt?
There is some discomfort, much like the sensation of heat, but most patients report that it is much more comfortable than tweezing or waxing.  After treatment the skin may be slightly red or swollen for a few minutes up to 1 hour.  Application of a cold compress for a few minutes will quicken the return to normal skin color.   Many clients have treatments during their lunch period and return to work for the afternoon.

 How Much Does it Cost?
Less than you think!  Electrolysis sessions are based on quarter-hour segments.  For pricing, see here.
